About Stonewall Inn
On June 27th, 1969 on 51 and 53 Christopher Street, in Greenwich New York if you wanted to enter the Stonewall Inn, you were greeted, and let inside only if you knew someone. It was by word of mouth only, because being gay was not excepted in society at that point in time. On the outside it seemed to be a regular old building. But, on the inside, it overflowed with people, with pulsing black lights flashing, where all you could do was be yourself. Long into the night, the doors broke open. Startling everyone in the building, many weren't sure what to do. The police had barged in without any notice. Some fought back, not entirely sure why the police were arresting people. Although the regular customers of the Stonewall, were used to monthly police check-ins, they were not used to police completely raiding the place. Within minutes, between 100-150 people showed up and congregated outside. Then the crowd grew and grew. That's where it all started. This event was, and still is in the gay community, because they could, after it happened, be who they are. Back before this occurred, gays were thought of as having a mental disorder, and being sick, not able to tell anyone who they were. And to this day people all over the nation celebrate this day, and throw a huge parade.
